Information overload seems to be an occupational hazard for anyone spending time on the internet these days, particularly on social media channels.  Coupled with the fact that new social media platforms pop up on what seems like a daily basis, it can be tough for financial professionals to sift through the noise and find actionable, relevant insight in the Facebook and Twitter-spheres.

To help separate the chaff from the wheat, Sageworks identified 10 must-follow Twitter accounts for accounting professionals:

1) @AICPA – Anyone who is even peripherally related to or associated with the accounting industry will be familiar with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.  From AICPA news and updates to relevant links from around the web, the AICPA Twitter feed is an essential source of information for accounting professionals.

2) @CPA_Trendlines – While Twitter is fertile ground for a number of social media-savvy financial professionals who have built their online profile and footprint, Rick Telberg puts most of them to shame.  He reaches a large number of accounting professionals via his CPA Trendlines website, but it’s his Twitter reach that really turns heads.  With more than twenty thousand followers, Rick has clearly found a sizable audience.

3) @AccountingToday –Accounting Today, Source Media’s publication for CPAs and accounting professionals, is one of the standard bearers in the industry. Its Twitter account serves mainly as a feed for the content housed on their website, but that’s more than enough for an audience of nearly 50 thousand followers hungry for the publication’s insight.

4) @imobannon– As the chief editor of CPA Practice Advisor, Isaac O’Bannon is at the helm of one of the largest, most respected sources of accounting information in the country.   Be sure to follow Isaac for the latest accounting information, particularly on topics related to technology and innovation.

5) @AccountingWEB – AccountingWEB, a community site for accountants, is another go-to source for accounting professionals looking to stay abreast of what’s going on in their industry.  For a sense of what’s going on in the accounting sphere across the pond, be sure to check out @AccountingWEBuk as well.

6) @gcrosley – Gale Crosley, owner and operator of Crosley Company consulting firm, has been recognized as one of the leaders of the industry by Accounting Today, CPA Practice Advisor and Inside Public Accounting.  Her perspective and insight, which she shares with her 1700 followers on Twitter, is one that accounting professionals should certainly be aware of.

7) @Tomhood – As the CEO of both the Business Learnings Institute and the Maryland Association of CPAs, it’s safe to say that Tom Hood keeps busy.   He shares a variety of content- from webinars on the ACA to quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.-with his Twitter followers (a number that now exceeds 11 thousand).

8) @nysscpa – New York is the financial hub of the country, so it’s no surprise that the New York State Society of CPAs is one of the largest and most influential state accounting associations in the nation.  With more than 28 thousand members (and over seven thousand followers on Twitter) the NYSSCPA feed is a crucial source of information for all accounting professionals, regardless of whether or not they reside in the Greater New York region.

9) @taxgirl – Kelly Phillips Erb, better known as the “Tax Girl,” has cultivated a huge following (see her Twitter followers- an eye popping 32 thousand) through her popular blog for Forbes.com. Follow Kelly for all things tax-related.

10) @DougSleeter – Named to Accounting Today’s prestigious “100 most influential” list, Doug Sleeter is one of the leading voices in accounting technology.   Expect articles and updates from his company, The Sleeter Group, mixed in with other news items related to the accounting world.
