Texas Advocacy Project and Abrigo Launch 11th Annual Backpacks for Hope Campaign

Austin, Texas, June 17, 2022- – On Tuesday, June 21st Texas Advocacy Project (TAP) will kick off its 11th
Annual Backpacks for Hope Campaign which will run from June 21st – July 22nd. The Central Texas kickoff will begin with a Press Conference at Abrigo’s office location (12331-B Riata Trace Pkwy building 4 suite 200, Austin, TX 78727) at 10am.

Throughout the campaign, TAP will collect NEW backpacks filled with NEW school supplies to distribute to children of domestic abuse survivors displaced from their homes. Thanks to our community supporters, we will have numerous collection sites throughout Central Texas – found at www.texasadvocacyproject.org/backpacks-hope. These backpacks go to families who have found themselves living in domestic violence shelters and agencies across Texas after fleeing their violent homes with little more than the clothes on their backs. In addition to school supplies, each backpack is fitted with a discreet tag listing TAP’s toll-free legal line, 800.374.HOPE, information on how to access TAP's free legal and social services, and safety planning information.

“Starting school is hard enough for any child, but imagine being a child living in a domestic violence shelter that shows up at a brand new school without a backpack like all the other kids have. Backpacks for Hope aims to provide each of these kids in a Texas shelter with a backpack and school supplies so they can feel confident and fit in on the first day of school. Last year Texas Advocacy Project distributed over 1,600 backpacks. This year we anticipate up to 2,000 requests for backpacks from shelters. We really need help from the community to reach this goal and help these kids.”
- DeeDee Biscoe, Biscoe Insurance Group/Allstate Insurance Agency

“The impact was significant since school supplies for students in our area cost approximately $180 for each student. This makes it impossible for most victims & puts a strain on our small agency finances.”

Texas Advocacy Project extends gratitude to all of our community partners including volunteers, The Allstate Foundation and Agents, and Accenture. TAP is excited to partner with Abrigo, an Austin-based technology company focused on supporting community financial institutions, who will collect supplies for and build complete Backpacks for Hope.
